Ollie Johnston

Né le 31 octobre 1912 à Palo Alto en Californie, Ollie Johnston fut diplômé de la Stanford University, où son père était enseignant. Le 21 janvier 1935, Ollie rejoint les Walt Disney Studios en tant qu'apprenti pour travailler sur quelques courts comme Mickey's Garden et The Tortoise and the Hare (gagnant d'un Academy award en tant que meilleur dessin animé). C'est alors qu'il passa sur le projet de Blanche Neige et les Sept Nains puis, ayant fait ses preuves, participa à plus de 24 autres films comme Fantasia, Mélodie du Sud, Cendrillon, Alice au Pays des Merveilles, La Belle et le Clochard, et La Belle au Bois Dormant.
Récompensé par un trophée Légende en 1989 avec les autres 9 old men, il est reconnu pour avoir insufflé une chaleur et une émotion sans commune mesure jusque là pour un personnage animé. Son meilleur amis à la société, Franck Thomas un autre des "9 old" disait de lui: "Ollie est le seul animateur des Studios qui est sensibles aux relations entre les personnages et qui comprend comment ils influent sur l'histoire. Il dit un jour "Tu sais, un acte comme deux personnes se donnant la main peut communiquer de façon très intense". Il avait raison, sa chaleur a fait la différence pour de nombreux personnages Disney.
Ainsi, Ollie a animé des amitiés aussi mémorables que celles de Baloo et Mowgli dans Le Livre de la Jungle, ou les relations étonnantes entre le serpent Sir Hiss et le prince Jean dans Robin des Bois. Il a mis en valeur sa propre sensibilité en animant Panpan dans Bambi, Monsieur Mouche dans Peter Pan et le trio des petites fées dans La Belle au Bois Dormant. Pour Ollie ainsi qu'il le dit:"C'était tous de très bon vieux amis, dont je me souviens parfaitement"
Il adorait les trains, et pendant son temps libre il créa un parcours chez lui, et par la même occasion, créa l'interet de Walt pour les trainsRetraité en 1978 des studios après 43 ans de travail, il coécrit 4 livres avec Frank Thomas dont le fameux "Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life," suivit par "Too Funny For Words," "Walt Disney's Bambi: The Story and the Film," et "The Disney Villain."

Il lui fut rendu hommage en 1995 dans le court métrage de Mickey Runaway Brain dans lequel un méchant fut appelé "Dr. Frankenollie." Les deux amis furent également mis à l'honneur dans un documentaire biographique de 1995, Frank and Ollie, dirigé par Theodore Thomas, fils de Frank, présenté au Festival International du film de Toronto. Ce documentaire mets en avant leurs carrières professionnelles, la vie privée et leur amitié. Un autre hommage lui fut rendu ainsi qu'à son ami dans Le Géant de Fer ainsi que dans Les Indestructibles. Le 10 novembre 2005 , Ollie Johnston fut l'un des décorés de la prestigieuse National Medal of Arts , donnée par le Président George W. Bush lors d'une cérémonie dans le Bureau oval. Ollie Johnston est décédé le 14 avril 2008.
