John Lounsbery

Si l'on en croit Frank Thomas et Ollie Johnston, John Lounsbery a sa propre perception des choses. Dans le livre Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life, on apprend que quelque soit la situation, et même quand elle ne peut pas être pire, John pouvait toujours faire "Quelques observations amusantes pour éclairer la situation". Bien que timide par nature, les personnages de John étaient quant à eux bien loin de ressembler à leur créateur. Pour ses pairs, les personnages créés étaient toujours amusant à regarder.
En fait, John Lounsbery a dit un jour que son personnage favori de tout ceux qu'il avait eu l'opportunité d'animer était le séducteur Ben Ali, l'alligator danseur que l'on peut voir dans la séquence La Danse des Heures de Fantasia. John Lonusbery s'est également occupé de l'animation d'autres personnages mémorables tel que Grand Coquin dans Pinocchio , Timothée la souris dans Dumbo, et le joyeux Tony dans La Belle et le Clochard.

John est né le 9 mars 1911 à Cincinnati dans l'Ohio. Il était le plus jeune des trois fils de la famille. Il a grandit dans le Colorado où il appréciait les joies du sport, le dessin mais aussi les randonnées d'été dans les montagnes. Il poursuivit des études à l'Art Institute de Denver, d'où il sorti diplômé en 1932. Il déménagea la même année à Los Angeles, pour travailler comme artiste publicitaire en freelance. Il continuait de suivre des cours à l'Art Center School of Design, où un de ses professeur découvrant son talent l'envoya vers les Walt Disney Studios qui étaient en train de recruter.

Le 2 juillet 1935, John rejoint l'équipe d'animateur des studios Disney comme assistant animateur de Norm 'Fergy' Ferguson sur le film Blanche Neige et les Sept Nains. Il se spécialisa ensuite pendant plusieurs années dans les courts métrages de Pluto, il travailla ainsi sur Pluto's Playmate, Pluto at the Zoo ou Private Pluto. Il fut par la suite promut directeur de l'animation sur les films classiques tels que Dumbo, Mélodie du Sud  , Alice au Pays des Merveilles, Peter Pan, La Belle et le Clochard, La Belle au Bois Dormant, Le Livre de la Jungle, Les Aristochats et Robin des Bois.

Il travailla aussi comme directeur de l'animation sur les différent moyens métrages de Winnie l'ourson comme Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree et Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, qui gagnèrent un Academy Award dans la catégorie meilleur sujet de court métrage animé. Il dirigea aussi Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, qui fut nominé aux Oscars.
Lounsbery était surnommé affectueusement par ses collègues 'Louns' et était un incroyable esquisseur qui insipra de nombreux animateurs. Son dessin possédait un sentiment de tension rapide qui était unique.
John Lounsbery est mort le 13 février 1976. Il travaillait encore pour Disney comme directeur sur Les Aventures de Bernard et Bianca. En 1989, il est nommé Disney Legend aux côtés des autres "Nine Old Men".
